Which is the most beautiful place to visit in the Verdon? Esparron, Quinson, Sainte-Croix, Baudinard or the Galetas Bridge?

If you’re planning a getaway to the Verdon Gorges, you’ve probably asked yourself THE question:
Which is the most beautiful place to visit between Lake Esparron-de-Verdon, Quinson, Sainte-Croix, Baudinard or the Galetas Bridge?

In this article, you’ll find a clear, honest and helpful comparison to help you choose the spot that matches your expectations.
Activities, natural scenery, crowds, accessibility: we tell you everything.
(And spoiler: Lake Esparron ticks a lot of boxes.)

1. Lake Esparron-de-Verdon: the hidden gem

The advantages

  • Pleasant swimming in clear, clean water that is warmer than elsewhere in the Verdon

  • Wild and preserved natural setting, with no concrete developments

  • One of the biggest advantages of Lake Esparron is that you can navigate the beautiful Lower Verdon Gorges for 9 km, or explore the lake and its hidden coves – the choice is yours

  • Even in July and August, you can still find quiet spots to swim away from the crowds

  • Easy navigation by electric boat, pedal boat or canoe

  • Relaxed, family-friendly atmosphere, far from the crowds of Sainte-Croix

  • Perfect for swimming, picnics and peaceful outings

  • The lake is mainly discovered by boat, since no road goes around it – unlike Lake Sainte-Croix. This makes it more wild and better preserved

Things to know

  • Parking is limited in high season (arrive early)

  • No sandy beaches, but beautiful rocky coves

Best for: families, couples or seniors looking for peace and authenticity.

2. Quinson: perfect for a cultural escap

The advantages

What we like a little less

  • There is no real lake, just the entrance to the Lower Gorges, which limits swimming areas

  • The water is very cold, as it comes directly from the dam

  • Less convenient for large groups

  • Visually less spectacular than other Verdon spots

Best for: families with curious kids who enjoy history and gentle nature outings.

3. Baudinard Gorges: the hidden but sporty ge

The advantages

  • Impressive and narrow canyon landscapes

  • Less well known = fewer visitors

  • A real sense of adventure when kayaking

The limits

  • Limited parking

  • Few options for families or elderly visitors

  • Water is very cold all year round, coming directly from the bottom of the Sainte-Croix dam

  • Swimming is prohibited in the gorges for safety reasons

  • Paddle boards and inflatable boats are not allowed due to strict regulations

Best for: adventurers looking for wild scenery and a bit of adrenaline.

4. Lake Sainte-Croix: the most famous spot

The advantages

  • A large lake with developed beaches

  • Restaurants, rentals and tourist infrastructure

  • Very Instagram-friendly, especially from the Galetas Bridge

The main downsides

  • Very (sometimes too) crowded in summer

  • Some areas feel too urbanized

  • Renting a boat here is often less interesting: the lake is very large and the scenery doesn’t change much during navigation

  • Unlike Esparron, where every turn reveals a new cove or landscape

Best for: visitors who enjoy a lively “seaside resort” atmosphere.

5. Galetas Bridge and the Verdon Gorges: the postcard spot

The advantages

  • The most iconic photo viewpoint of the Verdon

  • Great for a canoe or pedal boat trip under the bridge

  • Spectacular landscapes

The less attractive points

  • Access is very congested in summer

  • Boat rentals are often limited to about 1 hour

  • No personalized welcome: first-come, first-served system, meaning long queues in high season

  • Prices are higher than other Verdon rental bases

  • Swimming is prohibited in the gorges from the Galetas Bridge, although many visitors don’t know it

  • Pedal boats and rental boats do not have ladders, making it difficult and sometimes dangerous to climb back on board after jumping into the water

Best for: ticking the “perfect postcard photo” box rather than spending a relaxing full day.

Conclusion: our favorite is Esparro

Each Verdon location has its own strengths:

  • Quinson for a gentle and cultural outing

  • Baudinard for lovers of wild gorges

  • Sainte-Croix for fans of lively wide open spaces

  • Galetas Bridge for the postcard photo

But if you’re looking for the perfect balance between nature, calm, swimming and exploration, Lake Esparron-de-Verdon ticks all the boxes.

It’s a wild lake with very little construction, easily explored by boat, with peaceful coves even in summer and constantly changing landscapes to discover.

It’s also one of the warmest lakes in the Verdon, perfect for swimming from spring through September.
